German cabinet maker, Henry Steinway, began making pianos out of his home. By the year 1853, Henry had moved to America, finished over 400 pianos, and started Steinway and Sons. By the early 1880s, Steinway and Sons would churn out around 60 patents changing the modern piano forever. Steinway and Sons went on to apply the principles developed in the work "On Sensations and Tone" by physicist Hermann Von Helmholtz. This work paved the way for much of the piano innovations during the mid-to-late 19th century. In 1932, Josef Hofmann requested a faster, more-responsive action in the keys. Steinway and Sons went on to patent and deliver the only accelerated action of any piano. Even today, Steinway and Sons is the only piano in the world that utilizes this tedious and time consuming technology in order to produce the world's greatest piano.
